SkyRunner

SkyRunner Illuminates Flying Car Potential for Military Applications

The age of the flying car in military operations has arrived. According to Stewart Hamel, founder of SkyRunner and expert in the technology of flying cars, there are several immediate military applications today for which the flying car can be utilized. Hamel, whose SkyRunner MK 3.2 is the product of six years of military, off-road and pilot input, said, “Infiltration and exfiltration (piloted by robots in high-hazard areas) and medical evacuation are a few of the military uses for flying cars. This technology also has similar advantages to existing aircraft such as helicopters and drones. The big idea is that it solves gaps in operational capability, preserves safety-of-mission, preserves safety-of-force, and represents billions of dollars in savings against operational overkill.”1

The idea of flying vehicles utilized in the military is not new. Over 60 years ago, the U.S. military paid Piasecki Aircraft Corporation to develop a “flying jeep.”2 Closer to present day, in 2010, a program was launched by the U.S. Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to design and build an army truck which, at the touch of a button, would become a helicopter. It would be able to fly above common hazards such as IEDs and landmines, much like Hamel’s SkyRunner, which is a much lighter and smaller vehicle than a truck and presents many of the same capabilities.3 “Such technology enhances adaptability, adds layers of redundancy and is modular to support unique (offensive/defensive) mission sets.” Hamel said.

In Russia a one-man “flying car” has been unveiled by defense manufacturer Kalashnikov.4 Popular Mechanics reports that the vehicle operates with 16 sets of rotors in a grid-like structure, is controlled using two joysticks, and is electrically powered. Its only downfall is that it currently cannot fly more than half an hour before exhausting its batteries; unlike SkyRunner, powered by 2 engines—one for flying, and one for ground use as an all-terrain vehicle—which can make a distance of 120 nautical miles.

Defense News previously reported a flying car innovated by French company Valyon. The vehicle, utilizing a paraglider propeller, can fly a distance of 600 miles at an airspeed of 50 mph, and is capable of reaching an altitude of 9,000 feet. It is also designed in such a way that it can move stealthily toward targets when airborne. This is another benefit shared with SkyRunner, which can drive a distance of 240 miles on top of the 120 nautical miles at an airspeed of 40 mph, to a restricted height of 10,000 feet. SkyRunner also utilizes a canopy and propeller.

Interestingly, military leaders have been captivated by the possibilities of flying car technology since viewing SkyRunner at a Fort Lauderdale, Florida boat show several years go. At the show the military became as interested as the recreational public and the results were considerable input into SkyRunner’s development. Their contributions included a design philosophy to enhance adaptability, redundancy, versatility, modularity, simplicity and serviceability. We beefed up the vehicle’s integrity and switched from one engine to two.

“As we are seeing, flying car technology is quickly evolving from eccentric hype into practical, high-impact applications for government security and military theaters,” Hamel concluded. “Operational capability, safety-of-mission and safety-of-force is the baseline. The next question is, what does it all cost (in Lifecyle of procurement, post-procurement and hourly operations)? While SkyRunner isn’t poised as a perfect substitute for helicopters or drones, it’s operational versatility, simplicity, serviceability and modularity is game changing for short range missions. When measured against price, the next question is… how can an agency afford not to have this technology in inventory?”

About SkyRunner

SkyRunner manufactures and sells FAA-certified special light sport aircraft (S-LSA) which are fused with a rugged, military-grade all-terrain vehicle. Stewart Hamel looked to his passion—adventure—in developing SkyRunner. SkyRunner was designed as a family centerpiece for sharing adventure with Hamel’s kids and family. It has evolved into a military grade utility vehicle, which its integrity and reliability have only improved. The two-seat SkyRunner is 100% designed, engineered, manufactured and tested in the United States. In July, 2016, SkyRunner was granted S-LSA status by the FAA; on March 6, 2017, SkyRunner was awarded several exemptions. UPS SURVEY Unveils AUTOMOTIVE Aftermarket ONLINE Consumer Preferences

A new study, UPS Pulse of the Online Shopper™ for Automotive Parts & Accessories Buyers,” highlights new findings about online consumers that can help aftermarket automotive suppliers compete more effectively.

Primary Findings were:

1.      Although price is a major factor in the online purchasing process, automotive parts and accessories (AP&A) survey respondents said non-price features, such as the seller’s return policy, product selection and shipping options make up 60% of all comparison-shopping considerations.

2.      Online sellers who can best meet and manage their online customers’ expectations may have a more meaningful advantage over their competition, according to recent comScore research.

3.      75% reported that they have added additional items to their shopping carts to qualify for free shipping.

4.      Online shoppers are willing to wait up to 7 days to receive their shipment in exchange for no additional fees.

Additional survey findings include:

Channel Preference and Usage

·         61% percent prefer to shop online while only 27% prefer to purchase in-store.
·         46% of online shopping occurs between the hours of 6:00-9:00 p.m. For sellers, this means that later order cut-off times could be a potential differentiator and a customer service advantage over the competition.
·         39% of AP&A shoppers report spending $250 or more from their computer versus 11% on tablet devices and 9% through their smartphone. The growing adoption of mobile and tablet devices imply that sellers should closely monitor demand of this channel preference and adapt their sales channel strategy accordingly.
·         1 in 10 buyers prefer to shop using a mobile device or tablet.

Shopper Satisfaction

·         Although 81% of AP&A shoppers surveyed were satisfied overall with the shopping experience, they are the least satisfied with the amount of control and flexibility they have when it comes to the delivery of their purchases. Shoppers are looking for more flexibility to choose delivery dates and times, ability to pick up their order at a convenient retail location, flexibility to re-route packages and environmentally “green” shipping options.
·         53% of AP&A buyers said the availability of free or discounted shipping on automotive websites needs the most improvement. This was followed by 42% who would like ease of checkout improvements and 40% who were looking for more clear and easy understanding of the seller’s return policy.
·         48% said they abandoned their online shopping cart if the shipping cost was higher than they expected or if they discovered that their order wasn’t large enough to qualify for free shipping.

Shipping

·         96% of respondents indicated the ability to track their shipment is important.

Returns

·         59% reported being satisfied with the ease of making returns and exchanges, indicating there is room for improvement in this area.
·         71% of online shoppers said they are more likely to purchase from a seller for the first time if that seller has a “hassle-free” returns policy.
·         Restocking fees were a deal breaker for most shoppers. Shoppers also said they are less likely to make a purchase if they have to pay a restocking fee, even if the actual return shipping is free.

Survey Methodology: The data used for the study was extracted from the second annual UPS Pulse of the Online Shopper Study™ - a survey of 3,000 online consumers. The AP&A study on automotive aftermarket buyers was tabulated from nearly 200 respondents who shop online for automotive parts and accessories.

Purosol Upgraded Microfiber Cloths for Efficient Cleaning

If you want to use safe products for cleaning the inside of your car, PUROSOL (www.PUROSOL.com ) has an upgraded microfiber cloth to efficiently supplement its product line of advanced, enzyme-based green cleaning products.

The new cloth represents months of research and field testing and utilizes a new ultra-fine microfiber thread representing the next generation of refined microfiber fabric technology.  The cloth composition and weave is designed to deliver the proper absorbency and softness to insure proper delivery of the PUROSOL solution without harming the surface being cleaned.   The new cloth has a silk-like feel and can withstand repeated washings without the need for replacement.  Fabric softeners are not recommended when washing the cloth.  The new cloth is 6" x 6" and comes in a clear reusable vinyl envelop.  For larger cleaning application or commercial use, the Origin Labs also offers its large 12" x 16" commercial microfiber suede cloth.

"Using an improper or unclean cloth to clean can cause as much damage and using the wrong solution," said Origin Laboratories, LLC vice president Steven D'Antoni.  "One of the most common mistakes is to use a cloth that was previously used with a solvent based cleaning agent or a fabric not designed for cleaning.  Extensive research and field testing was undertaken for our new cloth to insure it complemented our unique product formula."

The small PUROSOL microfiber cloth is sold separately from their environmentally safe cleaning solution and priced at $6.50 and the large cloth is sold for $9.95.  The small cloth is available on the company's web site www.PUROSOL.com or at leading retailers throughout the country.  The large microfiber cloth can be ordered by request at customerservice@PUROSOL.com.

Unlike ordinary off-the-shelf cleaners, which are made up primarily of alcohol, ammonia, harsh solvents and colored dye, the PUROSOL line of products is completely organic and environmentally safe.  This advanced cleaner is non-toxic, hypo-allergenic, contains no CFCs, no detergents and no solvents of any kind (including alcohol, ammonia and chlorine) which can subtly eat away at porous electronic screens and strip away the crucial anti-glare coatings of today's high-priced glasses lenses.

As part of its unique formula, PUROSOL neutralizes the molecular charges on the lens surface, which normally attracts dust and dirt particles, thereby extending the life of the cleaning.  While this effect diminishes over time, the particles which do come to rest on the lens can be easily repelled by blowing or wiping (without the solution) following a recent cleaning.  Without having to clean as frequently, the surface remains protected longer and the life of the product (and solution) is extended.

PUROSOL Optical is available at fine retailers. PUROSOL can also be purchased by visiting www.PUROSOL.com .

Revealed: The Highest Road in Every U.S. State --- Geotab study ranks America’s most breathtaking views

Geotab, a global leader in IoT and connected transportation, has launched a new study analyzing U.S. road data to identify the highest paved road in every state in America. The interactive piece, which also ranks the top ten most breathtaking views, can be accessed in full. By analyzing the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Elevation Dataset , Geotab was able to determine the highest road coordinates in each state. Aside from identifying the highest, reachable peaks, Geotab also leveraged  the expertise of renowned outdoor photographer, Tony Bynum, to help determine the ranking of the ten most breathtaking views in America that can be accessed by hitting the open road.

\At 4,757 feet, the highest point of Alaska’s Dalton Highway (in the Atigun Pass on the Continental Divide) was identified as having the most stunning view in America. Taking second place is Colorado’s Mount Evans Scenic Byway. At 14,132 feet at its peak, it is the highest paved road in North America and one of the highest in the world.

“I’ve visited all of the roads on this list and there is simply nothing like Alaska for solitude and breadth of views,” says <Tony Bynum , outdoor photographer and conservationist. “In general, western U.S. scenery is the ‘best’, with a tendency to offer better visibility – up to 100 miles on clear days. However, most of the higher elevations in the west are closed in winter, whereas the central and eastern roads are often available all year round.”

The full ranking of America’s 10 most breathtaking views is below:

1)4,757ft Alaska
Dalton Highway, in the Atigun Pass

2)14,132ft Colorado
Mount Evans Scenic Byway

3) 10,953ft Wyoming
Beartooth Highway

4) 7,419ft Washington
National Forest Development Road 5400 to Slate Peak Radar Site

5) 9,714ft Oregon
Steens Mountain Loop Road

6) 13,781ft Hawaii
Mauna Kea Access Road

7) 6,265ft New Hampshire
Mount Washington Auto Road

8) 5,740ft Tennessee
Clingmans Dome Road

9) 4,850ft West Virginia
Forest Road 104 to peak of Spruce Knob

10) 4,765ft Georgia
State Route 180 Spur to Brasstown Bald

“This piece serves as a useful reminder of the sheer beauty that can be seen across America’s world-leading road network,” said Maria Sotra, VP of Marketing at Geotab. “Thanks to the nation’s ever-growing infrastructure system, you no longer have to embark on a grueling hike or commit to climbing a mountain in order to take in an awe-inspiring view. Instead, breathtaking views can often be seen from behind the wheel of a car.”

Explore the full findings and view the stunning landscape photography here:  www.geotab.com/americas-highest-roads/

About the data

U.S. Census TIGER/Line® Shapefiles were used to build a set of coordinates representing segments of every road in the United States, then the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Elevation Dataset was applied to establish the height of each segment. Google Maps and OpenStreetMap data was used to exclude roads that were not clearly accessible via an ordinary road vehicle. Roads were analyzed in October 2018. DAVIS INSTRUMENTS

Versatile Mega-Lights Consume Little Power

Dependable light goes a long way to ensure safety, security and comfort onboard or outdoors. Because of limited battery capacity on vessels and RVs, minimal power draw is a must to keep a light shining. Requiring a miniscule 0.11 amp, Mega-Lights from Davis Instruments can run 12 hours on one amp-hour of 12V power.
Also capable of operating continuously for more than 700 hours on a 12V, 80 amp-hour battery, three Mega-Light models offer multiple features and functions. All feature a bulb that draws just 0.11 amp, roughly 1/10 of an amp, that's visible for two miles when used as an anchor light. Also included is a easily interchangeable, brighter bulb for reading or use as a cockpit or interior light. It draws a mere 0.32 amp, or 1/3 amp.

Convenient and versatile, Mega-Lights are great for marking boats, reading and close-work, inspecting an engine, fishing at night or preparing a campfire meal. The waterproof, dual-function Fresnel lens projects light visible up to two nautical miles. When hung upside-down, the clear 1:1 lens provides area lighting to illuminate decks, cockpits and campgrounds.

A built-in light sensor on the Mega-Light Utility and Masthead models automatically turns the light on at dusk and off at dawn to provide security while owners are away. Unlike inexpensive yard lights, Mega-Lights are completely sealed and won't corrode in saltwater air. Their incandescent bulbs also react more quickly to sensors than LEDs as twilight descends.

The Mega-Light Utility features a new energy-efficient circuit board. It comes with 15' of heavy-duty cord and plugs into a 12V lighter socket. The featherweight light hangs from an adjustable, triangular bracket. Easily installed on a masthead, interior wall, cockpit or bulkhead, Mega-Light Masthead comes fastened to an L-shaped stainless steel bracket. A 12" pigtail simplifies wiring directly into the power source. Along with the two incandescent bulbs, Mega-Light Ultimate Cockpit Light features a red and yellow LED controlled by a waterproof push button. Six modes include steady white, red or yellow as well as blinking and alternating flashing red and yellow. Myriad uses include vessel identification, reading charts at night or creating ambience while entertaining aboard. It comes with 15' of heavy-duty cord, a 12V socket plug-in and sturdy hanger. The LEDs are guaranteed for more than 100,000 hours.

A spare Mega-Light works well in the car for emergencies or for loading and unloading at night. These powerful little lights are perfect stocking-stuffers or for giving on any occasion.

Suggested retail pricing for the Davis Instruments Mega-Light starts at $49.99.

INNOVATIVE LIGHTING

Innovative Bright LED Tail Lights Make Trailer Stand Out

Often, the key to preventing highway accidents is having trailer lights that are easily seen by other drivers.  Innovative Lighting's 250 series Slim Line LED Stop, Tail and Turn Light features a distinctive optical and lens design in a 15", 11-LED configuration for maximum visibility.

The advantages of LED technology are many. Brighter than incandescent bulbs, the 250 Slim Line can provide drivers following a trailer an extra 24' of stopping distance at 60 mph. Drawing 90% less power than incandescent bulbs, LEDs reduce the load on electrical systems. The Slim Line LED is rated for 100,000 hours, compared to 3,000 hours for an incandescent bulb, and it will last over 20 years.

Innovative Lighting's Slim Line is particularly appropriate for trailer and RV applications. With no brittle metal filaments to break, it stands up to shock and vibration. Having the electronic chip inside an epoxy substrate thoroughly protects the LEDs from the elements.

The unique design of Innovative Lighting's 250 Slim Line LED meets SAE/DOT specifications and Class A reflectance standards, minimizing the need for additional reflectors on a trailer or towed camper. Innovative Lighting has long been on the forefront of LED technology. Using sophisticated lens software, scientists collect, measure and redistribute the light energy to a calculated surface. A virtual modeling system optimizes the lens design so the light output loses the least amount of energy, assuring an accurate and reliable optical system.

The 250 series Slim Line LED Stop, Tail and Turn Light operates on 9-16 volt DC systems and draws 250 milliamps. The 15.5" L x 1.6" W x .8" D Slim Line can be mounted vertically, horizontally or at a 45˚angle.  Innovative Lighting offers a choice of red or clear lens in a sealed polycarbonate housing. It retails for $32.99.

MYTOPO.COM Releases A New Product -- A navigation-Ready TopophotoTM Map

Landowners and outdoor enthusiasts who have for years relied on the United States Geological Survey (USGS) topographic map series now have a new option. MyTopo.com, an innovator in the mapping industry, has created a TopoPhotoTM map, which combines information from the reliable USGS topographic map with a recent color aerial photograph, creating a navigation-ready hybrid map.

"The TopophotoTM maps take the best available topographic data and aerial photographs and combines them to create a more updated map, which we think will replace or at least be a useful supplement to the aging USGS topo maps we have relied upon for years," said Toohill. The maps are available now to order via the company’s online ordering system, and, like the company’s other maps, can be centered any place in the US, printed on large sheets of waterproof or glossy paper, personalized with a name and title, and shipped to the customer’s doorstep within 24-48 hours.

The maps provide the ability to see the elevation contours, roads, buildings, and geographic features labeled on a color aerial photograph taken in 2003-2006. "The TopoPhotoTM maps reveal recent changes on the landscape, including vegetation and development, but they maintain the traditional reliability of the USGS topographic maps," added Toohill.

MyTopo.com specializes in providing an easy and convenient process for outdoor enthusiasts to order large-format printed maps, including topo maps, aerial photos, and the new TopophotoTM maps. Customers use a five step process to customize their maps online; the maps are printed and shipped within 24-48 hours. The ordering process allows the customer to center their map any place in the US, chose the map’s scale, provide a title, and personalize further with the map owner’s name. The maps can be printed in several size choices and on waterproof, glossy or laminated paper. They range in price from $9.95 to $59.95, depending on map type and paper size.

The new TopophotoTM maps are available in more than 25 states, with the remaining states becoming available over the next several months. Current customers can reorder previously ordered topo or aerial photo maps in the TopophotoTM format by logging into their accounts and selecting the option to "start a new map here." The TopophotoTM maps are available in all three sizes and paper types and start at $29.95.

MyTopo.com is a private company based in Billings, MT. The company sells maps directly via web site www.mytopo.com, and also resells its maps via many popular websites including Topozone.com, MapTech.com, Cabelas.com, Remington.com, Realtree.com, the Digital Map Store and many more mapping and outdoor-related sites.

Aspirinpod -- Can Save A Life!

You're driving. Suddenly, you feel terrible pain spreading across your chest. It may be a heart attack and, heart attacks can kill. The Aspirinpod could make all the difference and save your - or someone else's life should they feel sudden pain coming on. How? it's a fact that chewing aspirin at the first sign of a heart attack can significantly improve the chances for survival, and the FDA reports that taking aspirin immediately when heart attack symptoms occur not only saves lives, but can also decrease heart damage. Studies show that chewing one uncoated 325 mg or four uncoated 81 mg aspirin immediately when heart attack symptoms first occur can increase your chances of survival.

New products are always coming out, but when I saw the Aspirinpod, I knew, immediately, that this product was not only unique, but a 'must have' for every member of my family and for friends as well.

The Aspirinpod is a red plastic tiny heart-shaped tiny container that holds one or two aspirin. It comes with a key chain that it can easily be placed in your glovebox, gym bag, bicycle, tool kit, handbag, yoga gear, ski jacket, golf bag, lunch box, bedside, tackle box, hunting vest, and dozens of other places. In less than a second, the container can be opened, the aspirin inside chewed, and together with calling 911, can save your life or that of a loved one. I placed one on my key ring so it will always be available.

Note: Do not take aspirin if allergic and ask your physician if aspirin is appropriate for you.

Aspirinpod can be purchased at drug stores, sporting goods stores, or is available by checking web site www.aspirinpod.com.

DID YOU KNOW?

NEW CAR AROMAS:

The aroma of a new car appeals to many people, but according to 2012 study from the non-profit Ecology Center and Healthy Stuff.org that "new car smell" may include toxic fumes from chemicals used to create the car's interior. Some indications are that the smell is generated from more than 50 volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, that are off-gassing in a relatively confined space. The flame retardants and plastics used in cars have been linked to illnesses when they have been used in other applications. To speed up the process of removing VOCs from a car, open all of the windows and let it sit in the hot sun.

SOME INTERESTING FACTS:

According to web site ThePeopleHistory.com, the average price for a new car in 1986 was $9,255. In 2015, the automotive resource Kelley Blue Book (www.kbb.com) reported that the average price for light vehicles in August 215 was $33,543. This illustrates how much more expensive new cars have become over the last three decades. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index inflation calculator indicates that $9,255 in 1986 had the same buying power as $20,041.47 in 2015, leaving consumers in 2015 well short of the necessary funds needed to purchase new vehicles. If new vehicle buyers in 1986 were faced with similar average car costs as buyers in 2015 faced, they would have needed $15,489.91 to drive a new car home from the dealership.

TIPS

Nissan's Do’s and don’ts for disinfecting your vehicle -- Tips on how to disinfect your vehicle without damaging its interior

Nissan is aiming to stop the spread of COVID-19 with many important tips. Frequent hand washing as directed by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a crucial part of staying healthy, but so is disinfecting surfaces, including those in your car.

"Most people are still using their vehicles, whether they are essential employees commuting to work or someone running to the grocery store while in quarantine," said Ryan Fulkerson, director, New Model Engineering, Nissan North America. "We want to make sure they're informed on how to best keep their vehicle disinfected."

The CDC recommends wearing disposable gloves for cleaning and then disinfecting surfaces. If a surface appears dirty, it should be wiped down with soap and water prior to disinfection. For vehicle interiors, a soft or microfiber cloth dampened with soap and water can be used to wipe down hard surfaces. While most common household disinfectants are effective, some are not ideal for use on a vehicle including bleach, hydrogen peroxide, benzene, thinners or other harsh and abrasive cleaners. These chemical products can damage your vehicle's upholstery and/or interior surfaces. Instead, alcohol-based wipes or sprays containing at least 70% alcohol are effective against the coronavirus according to the CDC, and can be safely used in your vehicle.

The infotainment screen is tricky because it's a high-touch area that should not come in contact with aggressive cleaners. Use screen wipes or a soft cloth dampened with soap and water to clean the screen surface. Wipe dry with a clean, soft cloth. Ammonia-based cleaners should not be used on infotainment screens, as they can damage the anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coatings. If the vehicle is equipped, using voice commands can help avoid touching the center screen altogether.

Nissan is providing the following checklist to help you remember vehicles surfaces to regularly disinfect:

Steering wheel
Key and remote fob
Exterior door handles, both sides
Trunk lid or lift gate grab areas
Interior door pulls, both sides and interior door panels
Start button, if equipped
Rear view mirror, back and edges
HVAC vents
Gear selector
Turn signal lever
Windshield wiper controls
Center stack knobs
Center console and arm rest
Seat belt and buckle. Avoid harsh cleaners on the belt itself, they can degrade the fibres and the belt's strength
Parking brake handle, parking brake or release lever

If a vehicle requires more attention, remember that automotive dealerships and their service departments are deemed essential services while many businesses around the country are closed in response to government mandates aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19. As a result, many Nissan service departments remain open and are available to assist with vehicle service and repairs. Many are offering no-contact drop off or at-home pick-up and delivery. Cycling in the street

In 2014, the latest year for which data is available, 726 cyclists were killed in collisions with motor vehicles in the United States. There are, of course, things that cyclists can do to avoid joining this grim statistic—not riding at night without lights and while dressed in dark clothes springs to mind. But drivers of two-ton hunks of speeding metal clearly have a major responsibility in not killing those with whom they share the road. Here are five simple strategies every driver should employ.

1. See cyclists

The classic response of motorists who strike cyclists is something in the order of “But officer, I didn’t see her! She just came out of nowhere!” As noted in a Houston Press analysis of bike crashes in the Houston area, almost all drivers, if they gave a statement to the police, said they just didn’t see the cyclist at all or in time to avoid hitting him or her. The reports then generated by police almost always reflect the driver’s account, and with the cyclist no longer alive, often there is little to counter that version of events.

“Motorists need to see cyclists,” says Steve Taylor, communications director of the League of American Bicyclists. “Be aware that cyclists are in the road, and that they have a right to be in the road. That is one of the biggest things that motorists do not realize: Cyclists have every bit as much right to be in the road as they do. And, depending on the situation, they can be in the middle of the road. Cyclists are real vehicles.”

2. Allow three feet when passing

If cyclists are real vehicles, it follows that motorists need to share the road with them. (Those “Share the Road” signs, however, are going out of fashion, because it turned out that many motorists took them as a directive to cyclists that they should get the hell out of the way. Many are now being replaced with far more useful “Bicycles May Use Full Lane” signs.) That means that drivers can only pass when it is safe to do so. In fact, roughly half the states require that vehicles pass cyclists at least three feet away:

It’s important to note, says the League of American Bicyclists’ Taylor, that states with such laws generally allow motorists to cross double yellow lines in order to pass cyclists safely. Be sure you have clear sight lines, though—crossing into the opposing lane around a blind curve is just asking for trouble.

3. Use the “Dutch reach”

Car drivers can kill or maim cyclists even after the engine is off, when they open their doors in the path of an oncoming bicycle—a hazard known to cyclists as “dooring.” The impact often throws the cyclist into the adjoining lane, where they can be run over by passing traffic.

Drivers can avoid this hazard through an ingenious method known as the “Dutch reach” (so called because it is supposedly included in Dutch driving tests). When getting out of your car, instead of opening the door with your left hand, reach around with the right. This forces you to turn your head—and to see if any cyclists are approaching. Here’s a primer, from our friends at Outside:

4. Advocate for protected bike lanes

Motorists wouldn’t have to worry about safely passing or dooring cyclists if the cyclists had their very own lane of traffic separate from that used by motorized vehicles. These are called protected bike lanes, and they’re what makes cycling in countries like Denmark so popular and enjoyable. They generally run next to sidewalks and are physically separated from car lanes by parked cars or some other barrier. Danish ones look like this:

There’s no problem with passing, no problem with dooring (on the driver’s side, at least), and the only time the cyclist has to enter the main roadway is to turn left. I ride on one daily commuting to Sierra’s Oakland office and can attest that it is remarkably liberating to ride free of fear of vehicular assault.

5. Leave your car behind

One of the most important determinants of cycling safety is numbers: The more cyclists there are, the more motorists are aware of them, and the safer everyone is. Cycling infrastructure—like the protected bike lanes above—attracts many otherwise risk-averse riders, including older people and parents with children. Motorists benefit as well, Taylor points out: By narrowing the roadway, protected bike lanes lower the top speeds for motorists. “That doesn’t mean that a safe driver gets there more slowly; it means that unsafe drivers tend to drive more slowly. It’s not taking away from motorists.”

So drivers, put down your keys and pick up a bike helmet. The safest car is the one that’s parked in the driveway.

Get Ready for a Spring Break Road Trip with these 10 GG Bailey Tips

The first day of spring is less than two weeks away, which means spring break and road trips are just around the corner. Millions of drivers will be hitting the highway, taking to the road to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine after a particularly harsh winter in most of the U.S.

Road travel, and especially long trips, can sometimes be a hassle, because riding in a vehicle for long periods of time can be rough on the body and the nerves, but the stress can mostly be avoided with a little preparation.

Check out GG Bailey's ten tips for spring break road trip travel to make sure you and your friends or family are prepared for the challenges of of the road.

1. Make sure your vehicle is road trip ready
The warm weather of spring allows you the perfect opportunity to make sure your vehicle is ready for a long trip. There are several parts of your vehicle that should be inspected and, if necessary, repaired before spending so much time on the road. The five most important things to look at, or to have someone look at for you, are:

Your tires -- Check for uneven wear and proper inflation (don't forget to check the spare too)
Your battery -- Make sure the terminals are free from corrosion and the connections are snug
Your fluids -- Check the levels of the engine coolant, the oil, and transmission and brake fluid. Change or top off as needed per your vehicle manufacturer’s instructions
Your belts -- Look for signs of cracking or fraying
Your brakes -- Rubbing or scrubbing noises generally mean your brake pads need to be replaced, but it is still a good idea to make sure they are at least 3 millimeters thick

2. Consider your comfort
If you are going to be in a car for a few hours or more, then you are going to want to be as comfortable as you can be. For the driver, this starts with the position of the seat, which most driving experts agree you probably have wrong. First, the back of the seat should be positioned between 90 and 100 degrees, and the driver should place their rear and lower back as far back in the seat as they can. Sitting like this reduces the strain on your lower back and ensures as much as of the spine as possible is being supported. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but it will result in much less pain down the road (literally and metaphorically). Next, slide the seat forward so that you are close enough to fully depress all pedals and still have a bend in the knee, but not so close that your knees come into contact with the steering column or dash. When you reach for the steering wheel you should be able to comfortably control it while still having a slight bend in the elbows and wrists. You can adjust the tilt of the wheel to your liking, but be sure it does not obstruct your view of the instruments.
If you want to add an extra layer of comfort, you can also add a Sheepskin Seat Vest Cover or Sheepskin Bucket or Bench Seat Cushion. Available in seven colors, GG Bailey's sheepskin seat accessories are universal fit for all seat types and they are every bit as durable and elegant as they are comfortable. These car accessories give you an extra bit of comfort and a whole lot of style.
Finally, with your driver’s seat properly adjusted, you will need to adjust your mirrors. There are plenty of ideas about the best way to do this, but the obvious answer is to make sure you have the most visibility from each mirror. Blind spots are going to happen, so be aware of your blindspots and always glance that way before changing lanes.

3. Give your vehicle a spring cleaning
For driving peace, make sure your vehicle has been recently cleaned. Since your road trip is likely to have you spending a significant amount of time behind the wheel, making sure your interior and exterior is freshly cleaned should be considered a priority. There are plenty of products out there that will get the job done, but GG Bailey prefers to suggest products that will allow you to clean your vehicle with a touch of luxury and style.

First, for the outside, pamper your vehicle with the company's Sheepskin Washmitts, made of 100 percent Merino sheepskin. These are soft enough to be ideal for dusting, polishing, and washing your car, truck, or SUV without damaging the paint. Available in black or grey, our washmitts can be used both wet and dry and with any soap that is safe for vehicle paint. Simply rinse your mitt afterward and it will last a lifetime.
For the interior, GG Bailey offers Sheepskin Duster, ideal for safe dusting and debris removal for your vehicle dash, and the Oreck XLAUTO Car Vacuum. The lightweight sleek silver vacuum plugs into the cigarette lighter and has a 15-foot cord for reaching into the trunk, cargo, and other hard-to-reach places. And it’s small enough to store in your vehicle, so you can take it along on your road trip.

4. Pack your vehicle the day before departure
The morning of many road trips are often filled with a chaotic rush of passengers attempting to pack their bags, load the car, and hit the road. But all that stress can be easily avoided with some proper planning. Pack your bags the day before and load up the trunk or cargo area before you go to bed and you can avoid the morning travel hustle. Just picture getting up the morning of your trip, enjoying some breakfast, and pulling out of the driveway on time and in a great mood.
All you need to do to make it happen is pack the night before. You won’t feel as rushed, which means you are less likely to forget something and more likely to load your vehicle in an efficient way. If you'd like to protect your vehicle and add some style GG Bailey has a multitiude of cargo mats. Pick an animal, Oriental, camo, or plaid pattern from the company's  Car Couture™ line, or design your own custom cargo or trunk mat complete with personalization in the Design Your Mats™ section of Bailey's website.
5. Check your road trip essentials list
If you packed your bags and loaded the vehicle the night before, the morning of departure should be easy, but to avoid being so relaxed and carefree that you forget something essential (like your cell phone charger, for example), create a road trip essentials list and be sure to check off the items you need to bring before heading out. Because most of the big things are already loaded, this will likely be a short list. Think about things like the digital devices and their necessary accessories that power our lives and keep the younger travelers in the backseat occupied, the toiletries you might not have packed the night before because you needed them in the morning, and snacks. Plenty of snacks.

6. Bring your furry friend
If you are a pet owner, then you probably consider Fido or Fluffy to be a four-legged family member, so why not take your pet with you? It’s better than boarding your animal and will make your pet happy too. More and more hotels are friendly toward pets, and few things engage house pets as much as exploring new locations. Just remember to pack treats and a leash and consider the stops your pet might require. If your pet travels with you often, you can protect your seats from eager paws with a GG Bailey Pet Car Mat. Available in two sizes and 10 patterns, the Pet Car Mats give your pooch a cushy seat that protects your interior from dirt and debris in style. Pet placemats available in the same patterns.

7. Plan the route
Distracted driving comes in many forms, and trying to adjust the GPS or zooming in on the map on your cell phone while driving can be dangerous. Be sure to plan your route ahead of time and leave the navigation up to your passengers so you can keep your eyes on the road. And you don't have to stress about missing your exit. Allow some time for traffic congestion and unexpected stops and you will be sure to make your destination on time. If you luck out and the trip is traffic-free, you can use that extra time to visit a roadside attraction or skip the drive-thrus and sit down to a nice meal.

8. Comfort makes passengers happy
If you are going to be on the road for a while, some passengers might nap along the way, so be sure to carry a pillow. A blanket is a good idea too because someone might be cold when everyone else is comfortable. Another thing to consider is entertainment for everyone, whether that is books, toys, music players, or portable gaming devices. You can also add some luxury and style with a custom touch by ordering personalized car floor mats from GG Bailey. The company encourages you to Design Your Mats™ or pick a pattern in its Car Couture™ section. The custom-fit floor mats will protect your vehicle while also adding comfort and class. There are only four steps to Design Your Mats, but thousands of possible design combinations.

9. Drive safely!
We know that you always obey speed limits and other traffic laws, but it still has to be said: Obey traffic laws and be safe. Nothing ruins the road trip mood like getting a speeding ticket in some far flung city or county. Know ahead of time that you will likely encounter drivers who aren't as careful as you are, as well as traffic problems. Try not to stress out when these things happen. Take your time, enjoy the journey, and be safe. After all, we don’t want all this preparation to be for naught, so you need to arrive at your destination safely.

10. But be prepared just in case
Driving safely is the surest way to avoid a wreck, but sometimes crashes happen that aren’t your fault, so it is a good idea to always be prepared for such situations. Consider keeping a first aid kit in the vehicle, and make sure the products inside are up-to-date. Think about letting someone know your travel plans, including the route and anticipated arrival time. And be sure to have the auto insurance and the medical insurance of everyone in your vehicle handy. No one ever expects to be in a car crash, but you should still be prepared for it just in case.

5 Tips for Winterizing Your Vehicle from GGBailey.com

With most of the East Coast of the United States being bombarded by snow and ice recently, now is a good time to consider the ways you can protect your vehicle, and yourself, from harsh winter weather.  Extreme temperatures can severely affect your car's performance and driveability, and driving in snowy and icy conditions can be dangerous. If you live in a cold weather climate, there are several steps you can take to winterzie your car.

Even if winter weather in your region is typically mild, one thing we have learned this winter thanks to recent storms is that freezing temperatures can hit almost any part of the country, so it is probably better to be overly cautious and take the preventative steps now so you don't have to worry about repairs later.

1. Consider your engine oil
The oil in your engine can change depending on how hot or cold the engine may be running. Outside temperatures will influence the internal temperature of your engine, so you need to make sure you are using the proper oil for the conditions, especially if you live in a region with extreme temperatures.

During the winter months, if you live where temperatures get below freezing, you'll want to switch over to thinner (less viscous) oil. If you run a 10W-30 in the summer, for example, try moving to a 5W-30 when changing your oil in the fall or winter. If the oil is too thick, it will flow too slowly between parts and your engine will get too hot. In the winter time, cold temperatures cause oil to thicken, but you can overcome this problem by filling your engine with an oil of a lower viscosity.

2. Check the battery
Most vehicle batteries last for about three to five years, and most batteries have the manufacture date printed on the side. Winter months are tough on your engine and cause it to work harder, and this puts more pressure on the battery. A thorough inspection of your battery, cables, terminals, and fluid will help you make sure your car is ready for the winter. If you need to buy a new one, make sure it has a recent manufacture date. A car battery ages, even while it sits unused on a shelf.

Even if your battery isn't that old, it's still a good idea to take a look and make sure nothing's wrong. Check the battery cables and clamps for fraying or corrosion. If there's a white, powdery substance around the clamps, that's corrosion from battery acid. You can buy cleaning products made just for this issue, but baking soda, a toothbrush, and water will work too. Your battery is also filled with fluid, so make sure it has enough inside. Most batteries have caps on top, and you can check the level by removing the caps. If it's low, fill the holes with distilled water, but be careful not to fill past the bottom of the cap.

3. Care for your windshield
An often overlooked part of the  winterizing process is your vehicle windshield. If you have ever driven behind another vehicle kicking up dirty road snow, then you already have a true appreciation for good wipers and windshield washer fluid. Low visibility can make driving in cold, snowy weather dangerous, so it is important to make sure the wiper blades are in good shape.

Your wiper blades are made out of rubber, and with time and usage they can crack, split, rip, and deteriorate. A good rule of thumb is to replace your windshield wipers every six to 12 months. This especially important during the winter because extreme cold can cause damage to the rubber, giving your wipers a shorter lifespan.

To clean the road grime from your windshield, you need to make sure your wiper fluid is full. For best results, select a washer fluid with an antifreeze solution. But beware, as some washer fluids can be harsh and damage your car's paint. Read the labels carefully and make sure to get a fluid that won't damage your paint.

Also, check out Bailey's Sheepskin Scrapermitts, which are made from 100% Merino Sheepskin to provide long-lasting durability. Each mitt is designed to provide ultimate warmth and luxurious comfort while protecting your hand from the cold.

4. Tire pressure is important
When it comes to driving in nasty winter weather, your tires are literally what keep your vehicle on the road. Driving in snowy and icy conditions is dangerous, but if you have to brave the elements, you can at least take a couple of steps to prepare.

If you choose to use regular tires on your car, check the air pressure on every tire, including your spare. Under-inflated tires close up the tread and significantly decrease traction, increasing the likelihood of sliding on icy patches. Many gas stations have the tools available for you to check tire pressure, and it costs nothing or next to nothing to fill your tires with the right amount of air. Your owner's manual will list the appropriate pounds for square inch for your tires, and most tires have the PSI requirements listed on the sidewall.

If you live in a region that is particularly hard hit by winter weather, then snow tires might be worth the investment. Snow tires give your vehicle a huge advantage over regular tires because the tread is designed and manufactured to perform in wet and icy conditions. Other options are all-weather tires, which feature some of the benefits of snow tires but can also be used year-round. Just remember, if you are going to change your tires, make sure you have the same type of tire on all four rims, as mixing and matching can potentially damage your vehicle.

5. GG Bailey custom floors mats are great for winter

The custom designed floor mats from our Design Your Car Mats™ section, as well as the luxury car floor mat patterns in our Car Couture™ line, obviously add style and a personalized touch to your vehicle, but the most basic function of a car floor mat is to protect your vehicle's interior. GG Bailey's 10 Tips for Preparing Your Car for Summer

It's finally summer -- and, while temperatures in some parts of the country have already been on the climb, the weather is sure to become even hotter during the next couple of months, so you should consider taking steps to protect your car.

Take the heat of summer, combine that with the extra travel associated with vacations, and your vehicle will be under a lot of stress during this time of year. There are simple maintenance steps you can take at home to ensure your vehicle is prepared for the stress of summer driving though. Others maybe require a professional, but every step you take to care for your car is a step in the right direction.

Check out our Ten Ways to Prepare Your Car for Summer below, and check out our Design Your Mats™ and Car Couture™ lines of custom car mats to add some extra style to your vehicle this summer.

AC system
The most important system in your car for keeping you comfortable during the summer months, your air conditioning system, needs regular service. A marginally operating system will fail from the extra use required by hot weather. You should consider having the system examined by a qualified technician. Additionally, newer model vehicles have cabin air filters that clean the air entering the heating and air conditioning system. Check your owner's manual to find the location of your filter and the suggested replacement interval. If it's time, or past time, replace the filter.

Cooling system
The most common source of summer breakdowns is overheating. Ideally, your vehicle's cooling system needs to be flushed and refilled about every 24 months. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. A 50-50 mixture of antifreeze and water is usually recommended, and most coolants you buy at your local auto parts store are already mixed, but be sure to check the label. It is important to note that you should never remove your radiator cap until the vehicle's engine is completely cooled. If you notice any leaks, have a professional check the condition of all the clamps, hoses, and drive belts that comprise the system.

Engine performance
Check and replace as needed the other filters in your engine. This includes the air, fuel, and PCV filers. In addition to the heat, a lack of frequent rain usually results in dusty conditions, so it is a good idea to have clean filters to begin the summer months. If your vehicle is showing any sort of potential problems -- hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc. -- have those checked out and fixed by a local repair shop ASAP. The stress of summer driving will only worsen any problems.

Engine oil
Oil and oil filter changes are especially important during the summer months. If you are going to be driving more often or further than normal, such as for vacation or while ferrying the kids back and forth to camps, consider having the oil changed more often than normal during the summer. It used to be that drivers were told they needed to change their engine oil weights during the summer to a heavier weight, but with modern oils this change is no longer beneficial. Modern oils are made to work in all seasons, so trust your owner's manual and use the weight suggested by your vehicle manufacturer. One change you can consider, however, is a switch to synthetic oil. Synthetic motor oil is really just natural oil that has been refined to a much higher degree and includes more complex additives for improving performance in both everyday and extreme conditions. Synthetics can resist heat better than conventionals and therefore will last longer while also extending the life of your motor.

Battery
While we're under the hood, let's turn our attention to your car battery. Batteries can fail any time of year, but while doing seasonal maintenance elsewhere, you might as well take a look at your vehicle's source of electricity. Professional equipment is required to determine if your battery is weak, but there are some routine steps you can take to care for your battery.
Check the terminals and scrape away any corrosion from the posts and cable connections. Clean all surfaces with warm water and a degreaser. Make sure all connections are tight. If battery caps are removable, check the fluid level monthly. Be sure to avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid and to wear eye protection and rubber gloves.

Tires
You should have your tires rotated about every 5,000 miles, and especially before any long distance trips. Check tire pressure about once a month in the morning while they're cold. Check your spare tire as well, because it won't do you any good if it is flat, and make sure the jack is in good condition. Make sure your tires have even wear and look for cuts and nicks in the sidewall. An alignment may be be required if you see uneven tread wear or if your vehicle pulls to one side while driving.

Brakes
Your brakes should be inspected as recommended in your manual, or sooner if you notice any vibrations, grabbing, odd noises, or a longer stopping distance. Even minor brake problems should be addressed quickly because those minor problems can become major problems in a hurry. If you change the brake pads yourself, be sure to check the rotors for grooves, as that can be a sign of wear. If you have your brakes serviced, be sure to ask for a rotor inspection.

Wipers
A dirty windshield causes eye fatigue and can pose a safety hazard. We mentioned before that summer weather can lead to more dust in the air, and that dust can collect on your windshield. If your wiper blades haven't been working well, the heat of summer will only cause more damage to the worn rubber. Replace worn blades and go ahead and top off your windshield washer fluid. Speaking of fluid, you might consider looking for one that helps remove bugs -- take a drive at night during the summer and your headlights will lure in hundreds of insects to crash into your windshield.

Lights
While we're talking about night time driving, you should also inspect all your lights and bulbs. Replace any burned out bulbs, and remove any excess dirt and debris from your vehicle lenses. Use a quality lens restorer if you see any signs of yellowing or fogging.

Prepare for emergencies
It's a good idea to be prepared for the worst, and keeping an emergency kit in your trunk or cargo area is one way to do that. Make sure your kit has the basics: a first aid kit, flares, and a flashlight. You may also considering storing some water in your vehicle, just in case you need to protect yourself from the heat while addressing a roadside repair or waiting for help.

When It's Raining ---

1) When the road is wet (and all other times), check your tires before driving. They should be inflated to the right pressure (found on the vehicle door edge, door post, glove box door or fuel door). Check the pressure at least once a month, and the tread depth. This will help prevent skids and aquaplaning.

2) Slow down. With water on the road, slick conditions follow where there may be oil on the road. Drive at a slower speed so you have better traction.

3) Remember how to maneuver in a skid. Should you go into a skid, don't slam on the brakes and do not pump the brakes. Instead, use firm, steady pressure and steer the car in the direction of the skid.

4) Keep a far distance from the car in front of you. Check your headlights before driving, as well as rear lights, brake lights and turn signals.

5) Drive in the tracks of the car in front of you and avoid using your brakes when possible. Always turn your headlights on uring rain, even a drizzle.

6) Know where you're going and leave plenty of time to get to your destination.

7) Aquaplaning occurs when the water in front of your tires build up faster than the car's weight can push it away. This causes the car to rise up and slide on a thin layer of water between the tires and the road. In fact, when this occurs, your car can be out of contact with the road and you can skid or drift out of your lane or off the road. To avoid this, keep your tires properly inflated, make certain there is good tread on the tires, slow down in wet weather, and stay away from puddles.

8) Is the rain coming down heavy? Then stop! The rain can overload the wiper blades so visibility will be very limited. Pull over where it's safe and wait for the rain to stop or ease.

9) Remember that cloudy weather reduces visibility so again extra caution is the brake shoes will lbe wet. And don't drive while tired. It's best to stop every couple of hours to rest.
